| SURVEY SHOWS THAT ONE-THIRD OF AMERICANS EXPERIENCE DIARRHEA, LESS THAN 1% ADMIT IT
WESTPORT, CT (April 1, 2011) — A new “man on the street” survey unveiled today showed that while one-third of Americans have diarrhea in any given year suggesting an overwhelming majority of Americans experience diarrhea during their lifetime, few are willing to discuss the subject.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, 99 million U.S. adults experience acute diarrhea every year resulting in lost work productivity and disruption to social life, yet international non-profit organization Save the Children was unable to find one person willing to talk about it. Otherwise known as “diarrhea denial,” these findings suggest an alarming trend that means this serious malady doesn’t get the airtime it deserves.
Meanwhile, since the condition is too embarrassing to discuss, thiscone of silence dooms the disease to low priority among global causes and issues. “Think about it, what would we call it? Poop No More? Make Diarrhea History? It’s just not that catchy,” said Mary Beth Powers who leads Save the Children’s campaign for child survival (www.goodgoes.org) . “We have a new vaccine and longstanding treatments that could potentially end the 1.4 million diarrhea deaths each year among children and not enough people are talking about that either.”
Powers and her colleagues at Save the Children are calling on their fellow Americans to finally do something about diarrhea and text POOP to 20222 to donate $10 for diarrhea treatment programs. “If people can’t talk about it, maybe they can TEXT about it. Could there be a more fitting day?” asked Powers.
IMPORTANT DISCLAIMERSave the Children understands that readers of this April 1 release may poo poo the premise of the report. While that is quite understandable, the humanitarian organization asks that the public to refrain from flushing theultimate message down the drain.
