Life Issues: Section 4
Picture yourself in a really desperate situation -- up against a wall with no one to help you. Then, someone comes along, a stranger, and completely rescues you. How relieved would you feel? Jesus told the story of the Good Samaritan: a man who was supposed to be enemies with a Jew who got mugged. The Samaritan went way out of his way to rescue the Jew, when none of his own peers would help. In fact, he even paid out of his own pocket to take care of him. Comparing the Samaritan with two other religious men who just passed by, Jesus asked, "'Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?' The expert in the law replied, 'The one who had mercy on him.' Jesus told him, 'Go and do likewise'" (Luke 10:36,37).
What is the greatest use of your life? Jesus said, "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself'" (Matthew 22:37-39). Mary came home from a long workday, only to find her son overwhelmed and depressed. She could have just passed him by and gone to bed, but she took her last time and energy to comfort him. Mary loved her son as herself. "Neighbors" with problems are everywhere, starting right in your own home. Everyday you can decide how you are going to respond to the problems you see. Are you going to pass by, or will you give your time and resources to help? It can be by saying a nice comment to someone, giving money to a poor person, or devoting your best talent to benefit others. Ask God to show you how to best use your life, and He will tell you. And if you follow Him, you will live a truly meaningful life. | |
